The Effect of Yoga in Adults with Hypertension

This case report discusses the condition of Sara, a 48-year-old Black woman with newly diagnosed hypertension (HTN). Despite initiating pharmacologic management and lifestyle modifications, Sara's blood pressure remained elevated, indicating the need for further intervention. The report explores the potential benefits of incorporating yoga as an adjunct therapy for blood pressure reduction. While many clinical practice guidelines focus on pharmacologic treatment, yoga has shown promise in reducing sympathetic nervous system activation and has been associated with effective blood pressure reduction in research trials. However, further research is needed to establish its widespread recommendation. The report highlights Sara's case and reviews relevant literature on the effects of yoga participation on blood pressure in adults with HTN.
